Moving in winter – how to prepare

Moving house in the winter months

The weather is a bit unpredictable at the moment – it was surprisingly warm in October. It may be that we have a white February, rather than Christmas, as the seasons continue to change. But whenever the cold weather comes, it can affect how you approach your move. Whether it’s your home or your office, there are ways to make the big day easier.

Get protection
We always encourage proper protection of furniture when moving, but when weather is wet, or you’re dealing with snow and ice, it’s even more important. Protective wrapping can help, as can boxes made for moving in any weather.

As you would expect, people walking in and out with wet feet or grit on their shoes in colder weather can lead to your property becoming dirty and flooring being damaged. If you have any old sheets or towels, we would recommend putting them down, while keeping the walking surface even (so as not to cause tripping hazards).

Factor in more time
Weather is a big factor in travel time, so even if it’s just rain that you’re moving in, rather than snow or ice, it’s worth allowing more time as traffic may be moving slower than usual.

Think about the time of day
With fewer hours of sunlight, it’s worth thinking about the time of day you’re aiming to start and finish moving, so you’re not trying to settle in to a new property in the darker hours.

Dress appropriately
Comfort is key as you’ll be moving a lot, but for those times when you’ll be having a rest in between, it’s worth layering up, to allow for the different temperatures throughout the day depending on how active you’ll be. As you’re likely to be on your feet for a while, ensure you’re wearing comfortable shoes, and also that you have some grip on your shoes if it’s likely to be slippery outside.

Allow for your journey
If you are moving far away, it’s worth packing some food and drink in your car just in case you don’t have a chance to stop on the way. Make sure that you check your vehicle before you set out, and have de-icer and a scraper in your car.

Make your destination comfortable
Speak to the people who are leaving your new property and arrange to have the heating on low when they leave, especially if they are doing so a day or two before you arrive. It’s horrible being in a place that cold has taken hold of, and it will be good to be nice and cosy when you are trying to settle in.
