If you are thinking about putting electrical items an appliances into storage, you will need to take a little bit more care…
How to pack electronics
Do you still have the boxes your electronics came in? These are the best things to store them in, to ensure protection. If you don’t have these, use a box as close to the item’s size as possible. Before you put them in, pack the electrical item in soft, clean packing paper with bubble wrap – anti-static is best. Make sure to pack them in tight so if there are any unexpected movements, impact will be minimised. Once all tucked in, seal the boxes well so that dust and moisture doesn’t easily get in.
Household appliances
A bit more preparation is involved here, to prevent mildew growth and water damage.
Fridges and freezers will need to be defrosted and water will need to be drained from the washing machine and dishwasher, then give everything a wipe down with baking soda, to help remove any residual bad odours. Ensure they are completely dry and, with all appliances, make sure that you leave the door slightly ajar to ensure there is proper ventilation and reduce the likelihood of mildew growth.
In terms of actual storage, empty the hoses of water. If they are completely water-free, you can store them inside appliances, so they are easier to find, and then make sure to attach the electrical cables securely to appliances too, so there aren’t any tripping hazards. To give a bit of extra protection, wrap them in thick furniture blankets.
Hazardous items
There are some things you can’t pack into storage, especially those that are dangerous in any way. Do not pack anything that is flammable, corrosive or explosive, or scented items. If you’re ever unsure of what you can or can’t pack away, please get in touch with the storage provider first.
Sometimes the safest place is with you
This might seem like a strange thing for us to say, as we help with arranging and moving your items into storage, but if you have expensive electronic devices or items of sentimental value, the best thing that you can do is keep them with you.
